Charter schools are public schools that are innovative and responsive to students’ needs while still being held accountable for improved student achievement. Arizona is home to 502 charter schools that enroll more than 101,000 students. Fully 25% of the state’s public schools are charter schools, and 10% of all public-school students are enrolled in charter schools-the highest percentage for any state in the nation.
They were created in 1994 in Arizona to:
· Provide a learning environment that will improve pupil achievement
· Provide additional academic choices for parents and pupils
