Black History Month 2021: Our Work Continues

This month is a time to reflect on and recognize the extraordinary contributions of African Americans here in Arizona and throughout our nation. The theme of Black History Month for 2021 – The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity – explores the African diaspora and the spread of Black families across the United States.

In Arizona, based on the latest data available, more than 12,000 African American students are attending public charter schools. While enrollments fluctuate from year to year, the trend among Black students in Arizona is clear: a growing percentage are choosing to attend charter rather than district schools.  As the raw numbers illustrate, public charters increased  enrollment of Black students by 46 percent over the decade (3,987 students), at the same time district enrollment fell by 2,100 students.

Not only are an increasing number of Black students opting to attend Arizona charter schools, these students are also outperforming their district peers. Since the inception of AzMERIT, Black students in charter schools have consistently scored better than their district peers on state tests in English Language Arts and Math.

In Arizona, enrollment trends demonstrate families are choosing public charter schools that are leveling the playing field for historically underserved students and closing opportunity and achievement gaps. Progress is being made, but too many students remain trapped in schools that don’t meet their needs, fostering a cycle of poverty and disadvantage. The Arizona Charter Schools Association is grounded in the belief that every student deserves access to a quality education. Our work continues.
